Hot back-to-school shoe trends via @FamousFootwear

Back-to-school is almost here! For those of us in the South where Summer began in late May, we have only a few days left. Amelia begins kindergarten on August 7th - next Wednesday!

We completed her back-to-school shopping this past weekend with a few new outfits and some sassy, sparkly Twinkle Toes! Her last pair of Twinkle Toes made a huge splash in preschool. By day two, I had several moms ask me where we got them! Famous Footwear has the hot styles kids love (yep, even light-up!) at reduced prices. And right now? Enjoy BOGO - Buy One, Get One 1/2 Off through September 14th! Even on backpacks.

Week 13

Week thirteen.

Nausea is mild but unpredictable.
Headaches are frequent and sharp.
Fatigue is persistent and strong.

I am hanging in there, really, but this is hard. Moving, summer, and pregnancy do not make the best partners. This is a much bigger challenge than when I didn't have a child yet!

My brand new nephew was born a few days ago. He is adorable! Watching him sleep, listening to his squeaks, and holding his warm little snuggly body are helping me to slowly begin to get excited about what is to come in our house. It is just so hard to shake up our easy, comfortable life that we finally grooved into only a year or so ago. I am starting over after a few too many years!

I most look forward to seeing Amelia step into her role as Big Sister. Her compassion and oversized heart are going to translate into one amazing sibling. Her shine is the only thing I am completely sure about at this time!

That time I went camping...

I am not a camper. In childhood, I had a Brownie troop that "camped" in someone's house. Maybe also once in the mall. Tents, snacks, nighttime stories... the works. Just without the night sky, bugs, or humidity.

Not really camping, you say? Okay...

I had this friend in college; the roommate of a boyfriend at the time. He was a drag-you-out-of-your-comfort-zone kind of friend. He led quiet, cautious me into many fun adventures with just a bit of convincing from his small-town Tennessee drawl and infectious sense of mischief.

New house means room for one more! #babynews

In other baby news, not the royal kind, my house will be a bit busier in about six months!

Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out how on earth I will balance another little person! Kindergarten starts at 7:50 am, five days per week. In a way, it's nice that I will have only one child on hand for several hours each day, but then there's work... and groceries... and pick up time... I hope this kiddo sleeps in the car better than Amelia did!

Ready to take #kindergarten by storm

The school supplies have been purchased.
The ever-so-important backpack selection has been made.
A few new cute (but comfortable) dresses are washed and ready.

Amelia starts kindergarten in 19 days!

Academically, I know she has what it takes. Thanks to very little help from me, she has really grown in her reading and puzzle skills over the summer. She sat down next to me just this morning and read half of Hop on Pop entirely by herself. The other day at lunch? She completed a search-a-word on her childrens' menu, again all by herself. Even the backwards words!

#WW Imaginary Worlds at ATL Botanical Garden

We took advantage of a few moments of sunshine over the July 4th holiday weekend to bring our guests to the Atlanta Botanical Garden. I knew the kids would enjoy meandering through the wooded paths and investigating the "jungle house" and orchid house. I was also really looking forward to seeing the latest amazing exhibit, Imaginary Worlds.

Breathtaking.

A 5-year-old's take on God

"Mommy? Does Jesus live up in the clouds?"

"Well, I guess so, Heaven is up there somewhere."

"Great-Grandma is with Jesus, right?"

"Yes, she is. She isn't here where we can see her, but she is an angel now. She can probably see us, and watch over us."

"Oh... just like Jesus can hear us? He knows what I am saying right now.... and right now."

"Yes, Jesus and God can see everything. They know everything - what you are feeling, thinking, and saying."

"Wow, I bet God is really good at games!"

(Laughing) "Well, yes, I guess He would always win."

"Like if he played Memory? He would know all the cards!!!"

Attention withdrawal

Without a sound, Amelia just climbed onto my lap and curled up for a cuddle. Our home has been bustling with energy and booming with sound for five days, with seven family visitors here for a fun long weekend.

Amelia's cousins are older, ages 9, 13, and 16. Despite the difference, the two younger ones play with her all day and into the night. They get along extremely well, and I barely see my daughter while they are here. She is entertained to the max and bursting with happiness. Even the eldest will get involved with a board game or hide-and-seek once in a while. It warms my heart to see them all together.

The other day before bed, she said to me,
"Mommy, I am so happy when my cousins are here."

The house is quiet now, the entire clan having moved on to their next vacation stop. After quiet time with a movie, the loneliness has set in. Amelia is experiencing major attention withdrawal. I am worn out from all the hustle and bustle and wondering what the week will bring. Probably a needy little girl. I should get to bed early tonight!

We are wishing that we didn't live so far away. Two times a year just isn't enough.

All of us #beautiful

"Mommy? Who is the prettiest person in the whole world?"
A question from my five year old tonight... it's a thinker. Amelia does not believe she is a pretty girl. At only five years old, she already wonders why people look different. She worries about what is pretty and what is not.

I don't dare tell her that a prettiest person exists.
And maybe she doesn't.

We are all beautiful. Every person was made unique. Every person a miracle.

Babies are beautiful. Ugly creeps in as we let our human ways take over. Ugliness appears in the wrongs that we do, in the cruel words we use, and in the evils we allow into our hearts.

I told my sweet, sensitive, lovely little girl that no one is the prettiest in the world. We are all beautiful if we have beautiful hearts. I reassured her that she is truly pretty because she is a caring, compassionate, amazing kid. I told her that her blue eye are astounding and her soft curls amazing, but her inside love shows her true beauty. And it always will.
