My husband and I took Amelia out on a special big kid date last night. We dressed up, left baby boy with a sitter, and made the 25-minute drive to the city for a traveling Broadway show! Amelia always enjoys going into the heart of the city. We point out the big buildings and show her where Daddy attended Georgia Tech for a couple years and where Mommy used to work on the 30th floor of the fancy Four Seasons hotel building. We parked in a lot next to the Fabulous Fox Theatre, a gorgeous step back in time that is listed on the National Historic Register. Amelia loved the brilliant lights on the Fox sign, the detailed ceilings and "castle-like" appearance, inside and out. With all the rush getting the baby's items laid out and instructions to the sitter plus the drive to town, we did not have a proper dinner. Amelia had absolutely no complaints munching on popcorn, pretzels, and Sour Patch Kids throughout the show (I promise she'll have some veggies today!).
Our favorite thing about the show? The ingenious costumes and rigging to make the actors truly appear to be swimming, floating mermaids and sea life. The opening music and bubbly curtain made us feel as if we were actually transported under the sea. Just like most families with little girls, we know the Little Mermaid movie inside and out. It was fun to hear some of the added songs and identify the tiny twists on the story that were added/changed for the Broadway version. According to Amelia, a couple of Prince Eric's songs were "too long" and "a little boring", but otherwise she was captivated - and so were we. The actress playing Ursula was truly outstanding with a powerful voice and a strong stage presence. And Ariel's character was the sweetest; someone you just want to become your friend. I don't want to give anything away, so try to see The Little Mermaid for yourself one day. The Little Mermaid is in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre through this weekend (7/13/14), and coming up soon in Raleigh, NC. Check the touring schedule for other cities.
Atlantans, if you can't make this fun production this time, keep an eye on the other Broadway in Atlanta productions like Mamma Mia in September, Phantom of the Opera in October, Dirty Dancing in November, and Newsies in late January 2015. There is always something great to see with Broadway in Atlanta and the Fabulous Fox Theatre!
