When the week begins right

Easter was a lovely day. Amelia woke early and I let her climb into our bed. She gently kissed Daddy on his cheek and snuggled in our sheets. I took a leisurely shower while they cuddled softly. Amelia did not pressure us to hurry, or play, or to go downstairs to investigate the Easter surprises.

So quiet. So sweet.

Eventually, we went downstairs. We watched her joy as she searched for eggs and pulled goodies out of her purple straw basket. Throughout the day, we spoke with friends and family. We enjoyed a delicious meal with amazing neighbors. We worked hard to pack and clean in preparation of the move, but it felt okay. There must be something about starting the day out in peace - it sets you up for a good day.

Hopefully for a good week too.

Another magical show on the way! #DisneyOnIce

Amelia's birthday is coming up in a couple weeks! The big FIVE. I am so excited for her and proud of what a compassionate, artistic, smart little lady she has become.

We are preparing for a birthday party and she specifically requested a Tinkerbell cake. For her big gift, she asked for Tinkerbell luggage. I see a theme here! So when I heard that Disney on Ice Presents Worlds Of Fantasy is coming to the Atlanta metro area and it includes... gasp!... Tinkerbell, I knew I could surprise her with one more great gift.

Moving on up.... new house!

We have been looking for a new home for a while - in order to get into some of the best schools in the state and, of course, to find a lovely castle for our sweet princess Amelia. Also with a playroom space for her multiplying toys and art supplies! Yay for clutter reduction in my grown-up space.

A healthy and surprisingly delicous choice! #FrozenFacts

I am a busy, balancing mama. Selecting and cooking food is one of my least favorite responsibilities. With Amelia in school, dance, and soccer, we have at least two days each week where I need fast dinner ideas. Similarly, I often find myself scrambling to quiet my rumbling stomach at lunch, when I have to soon be out the door to claim a coveted front-of-the-line spot in preschool carpool. Frozen foods give me the little break I need, because I can stockpile nutritious selections in the freezer when I need a one-step option.

"I like your glasses"

You know... no one tells me that they "like my glasses". However, this seems to be the #1 most common statement anyone says to my child. Amelia hears this comment at least twice a week, usually more. At the dentist the other day? Four people told Amelia, "I like your glasses" in a span of ten minutes.

The first couple times, she smiled and quietly expressed thanks.

The third time, she grinned, then hugged me.

The fourth time, she looked at the ground.

Working in fuzzy socks #workingmom

Working moms have been in the news quite a bit lately, thanks to the controversial declarations by Marissa Mayer and Sheryl Sandberg, two of the digital world's most powerful female leaders.

I am a working mother. I made the decision to cut my work hours and go part-time so I could be with my daughter as much as possible while continuing to keep up with the advertising/media industry (and saving a bit of my sanity).

She dressed herself... (yikes)

Draw a picture that you feel accurately depicts one of your last tweets...

Even funnier than her crazy outfit was her super-serious, detailed, four-year-old explanation of why it did, in fact, match.

I was not convinced. (But I let her wear it.)

#WW: From St. Peter's Square

I have been riveted to the amazing history and tradition of the new pope selection. I believe that, Catholic or not, the faith and respect shown during the past few days is something to be applauded.

The new Pope gave up his nice home and limo service as an Archbishop in Argentina. He takes the bus to work! He has not focused on his own power or success. If only all world leaders could put aside ego and entitlement...

How to turn vacation into a "letter of the week" lesson plan

Amelia's friends and teachers have been anxious to hear about her Hawaii vacation. She missed two weeks of school - an eternity in a preschooler's world.

Amelia wanted to talk about her trip, but she has a streak of shyness when it comes to individual attention. Also, I didn't want to take class time for vacation photos. So we had an idea...

Children's IS the best for children!

My sweet girl had an MRI this morning. It was a brain scan, ordered by her amazing and cautious pediatric ophthalmologist (because after three unsuccessful eye muscle surgeries, we want to rule out anything unexpected). It was similar to her surgeries; we arrived two hours early, asked a thousand questions, went from room to room, and watched as Amelia was evaluated, squeezed and poked by several different people.

I heart my BFF

Do you have a "best friend forever"?

I met my BFF when I was two years old. We were in preschool together and announced, hand-in-hand, that we were best friends. It stuck.

We lived in the same neighborhood for many years and practically had two sets of parents. I may have spent as much time with hers as I did my own. I was devastated in fourth grade when she moved away. But we did our best to keep in touch through letters and the occasional hour-long phone call. We emailed through college and spent Spring Break together.

My must-have baby product

My sister is shopping for baby gear! It is a very exiting time, and I recall it can be a bit overwhelming as well. I recommend browsing online baby stores to understand the various products and decide what items you may need in each major category. Then think about how or where you may use each of the large items.

For example, we used a pack-n-play next to our bed for the first 5-6 weeks, before moving sweet baby Amelia into her own room. Where will a newborn sleep? How much space do you have? Might you also need a travel bed for the next year or two?
