It's OK to slow down

"Nature is never in a hurry, yet everything gets accomplished." -Lao Tzu

I seriously cannot believe it is not yet December. It seems like we have had holiday to-dos and events for weeks already! Tis the season for purchases, events, school plays, parties.... never ending "do this" and "don't forget that". Throw in a surgery for my little girl next week, and I am a frazzled mess!

Rock out with Mickey's Music Festival

Another fantastic Disney Live! performance may be headed your way. If you love rockin' with your little love to the tunes of classic Disney movies, then Mickey's Music Festival may be the holiday gift idea for which you have been searching. Mickey Mouse and his friends rock and roll with special guests including Ariel, Aladdin, and Toy Story friends.

#WW: Escalators

Amelia loves escalators! This one, in a Westin hotel, is steep and fun. We had no idea that our nice Thanksgiving dinner out would include a ride!

Happy and healthy holidays

Our long Thanksgiving weekend included nights of fever and ibuprofen. Not to mention a trip to Children's urgent care. What we thought was a virus for Amelia turned out to be an infection. She is on the mend, but the experience made us even more mindful of germs and the importance of frequent hand washing. We are determined to get through the next exciting holiday illness-free!

#WW: Thankful pilgrim

We recently had the 4-year-olds' Thanksgiving Feast at Amelia's school. Parents brought in assigned dishes and we shared a meal in the fellowship hall. The children showed up in costumes and ran, arms wide open, to their parents. I am thankful that I was able to attend.(Don't I have an adorable little pilgrim?!)

Mommy, why do you say I'm special?

My child is the sensitive type. At age 4 1/2, she already doubts herself. Kids are mostly sweet at this age, but every now and then someone hurts her feelings. And she stands aside quietly and does not say a word.

When she has a bad night and pushes our buttons with rudeness and a complete lack of listening, she ends up crying quietly to herself in bed. She asks us later, "why am I a bad kid sometimes?" It seems no amount of encouraging, loving, and praising can break her strong will to blame herself. Amelia is an amazingly smart, considerate, well-mannered, wonderful kid. She has her naughty moments (like every other kid on earth), yet she takes it to heart and concludes that she is a "bad" person.

The other night, in the dark of her room before sleep took her to dreamland, Amelia whispered to me, "Mommy? Why do you say I'm special?".

@Cirque WOWS again with TOTEM

I cannot let today go by without a mention of last night's fun times with @inthekitchenKP.

I drove into the city from the 'burbs when it was already dark -
Alone.
No kiddo.
No husband.
... exciting stuff!

Step2 play kitchen #giveaway!

Here it is! The first of two fantastic giveaways I joined to hopefully help YOU get some amazing gifts for a child you love. The Step 2 Lifestyle Fresh Accents Kitchen is a really good one. Amelia has a little tiny kitchen that I, in fact, won from a blogger two years ago. She has gotten many hours of enjoyment from it. This deluxe Step 2 kitchen is even better! Good luck and happy holidays!

Happily keeping our secret

Almost a month ago, I let you in on our little secret: we're going to Disney World! We have kept this plan a secret from Amelia and will continue to do so. Probably until we're actually in the car on our way to sunny Florida.

The funny thing is, Amelia asks to go to Disney World nearly every day. Over and over again, she flips through her photo book from our February 2010 trip. She makes comments like, "I know it is expensive, but I really wish we could go there again sometime." She is such a kind and understanding four-year-old!

#TOTEM dazzles Atlanta

I owe a fellow blogger big! She is taking me as her +1 to the current Cirque du Soleil show - now playing at Atlantic Station in Atlanta. I get to have a grown-up evening enjoying one of my favorite entertainment spectacles. Over the past eleven years, I have been dazzled by amazing and eye-catching acts via Mystere and O in Las Vegas, La Nouba in Orlando, and Varekai and Dralion touring shows in Atlanta.

Surgery - 3rd time's a charm?

The pediatric ophthalmologist appointment went pretty much as expected. Mamas know these things. Her glasses are not helping the eye crossing enough. Our only course of action at this point is a third surgery, this time on the inner eye muscles, next to her nose. We do not know yet when the surgery will take place, but we will do our best to balance holiday events and recovery time - we want her to have every chance at a fun-filled holiday season.

Velma G has glasses too

Friday afternoon - an event for which we have been waiting in anxious anticipation for nine long weeks. We're going back to the pediatric ophthalmologist! Amelia has proudly (and adorably) worn her pink glasses for nine weeks. She says they help, but she tends to tell us anything helps (perhaps so we will leave her alone). We still see the eye crossing. She still makes funny head tilts. This mama is ready for a plan C. Probably back to surgery? We will see. I have my questions ready. I hope the doctor has enough time in his schedule for us! I plan on grabbing his undivided attention for a while.

Until I have an update, why don't you pop over to the beloved Little Four Eyes Site to read my latest post: a review of Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly.

#WW: Beginning to look at lot like...

Christmas!

Amelia and I went to the mall for lunch and browsing on November 2nd. We had barely put away the Halloween decorations, but the mall was already decked out for Christmas! In fact, Santa was scheduled to arrive later that night. Seriously! He is at our mall already.

Amelia was excited about the beautiful space awaiting the jolly guy himself:

Step2 Kitchen Event (bloggers wanted)

Bloggers, here is a chance to be part of a really great giveaway! And parents/grandparents, keep an eye out - starting 11/16, you have a chance to win this great prize for a kid you love!

Mommy & Me: Halloween costumes

Yet again, we had a family theme for Halloween!

Amelia was a lovely Cinderella. She wanted her Daddy to be her prince. That left me to be either an ugly stepmother or the Fairy Godmother. Luckily, my child laughed off the ugly stepmother, claiming that I could not be that ugly. So I whipped up a magical cape, gray hair, and a wand, and we were ready for some neighborhood fun.

Sunday Story: 10 Restaurants

Week number two of eleven. Sunday Story - based on an incredible prompt list from Daring to Live Fully, where I will eventually have a list of 100 things I love.

10 Restaurants (my Atlanta area favorites)
  • Stoney River  - They claim "legendary steaks", and I have to agree. The caramelized onion mashed potatoes are also delish! And the caprese salad, and the french onion soup....
  • Bistro Niko - Modern French and soooo yummy. The cheese puffs are my favorite pre-dinner treat! My only complaint is that the basket should be much, much larger.
  • Texas Roadhouse - A casual chain restaurant, but my daughter's favorite. She loves when the servers line dance! Food is tasty and very reasonably priced.

Disney Update: Witchy!

I can feel it... Oz the Great and Powerful is going to be epic. March 8th, 2013.

Disney released a new poster panel this week. Take a sneak peek at the witch!

In case you missed it, here is the first Oz poster and a brief synopsis of the film (from a July Disney update).

Friday Funny: What If?

This sounds exactly like my daughter at bedtime! Sharing a Friday funny from my favorite writer, the great Shel Silverstein:

Whatif
By Shel Silverstein
from the book "A Light in the Attic" (1981)

Last night, while I lay thinking here,
some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
and pranced and partied all night long
and sang their same old Whatif song:
Whatif I'm dumb in school?
Whatif they've closed the swimming pool?
Whatif I get beat up?
Whatif there's poison in my cup?
Whatif I start to cry?
Whatif I get sick and die?
Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?
Whatif I don't grow talle?
Whatif my head starts getting smaller?
Whatif the fish won't bite?
Whatif the wind tears up my kite?
Whatif they start a war?
Whatif my parents get divorced?
Whatif the bus is late?
Whatif my teeth don't grow in straight?
Whatif I tear my pants?
Whatif I never learn to dance?
Everything seems well, and then
the nighttime Whatifs strike again!
